Netherland by Joseph O'Neill

October 11, 2009

Video production by Skye MacLeod

From the Chelsea Hotel to the cricket clubs and the startling unfamiliarity of many aspects of New York, we will find ourselves initiated into a new urban reality. It is seen through the eyes of Hans van den Broek, from Holland via London, suffering a broken marriage and a sense of being permanently lost. We will discover what it is to find revelations and recovery among strangers--and at last to learn from one's family what one is 'supposed to be seeing' in the new world.

"Actually, writing 'Netherland' was all hard. Nothing about it was easy. I was worried the entire time I was writing it. Four years into the process, I had to rewrite the whole first half. I guess I had only one moment when I thought things were going well. It was when I came up with the phrase, 'invertebrate time."
