Child-to-Child Art Exchange: ArtKits for Kenya
Sharing Culture Through the Visual Arts…
In December 2006, The Maxine Greene Foundation, Inc. awarded a Greene Grant to the Helen Day Art Center of Stowe, Vermont for the project, Child-to-Child Art Exchange: ArtKits for Kenya. Guided by Cacky Peltz, an elementary public school art teacher and long-time Helen Day Art Center volunteer, this program will:
- Plan art workshops for Kenyan and Vermont children.
- Increase the Vermont children’s awareness of African culture through the visual arts by having them use materials similar to those of the Kenyan children in their workshops.
- Involve the children in developing ArtKits for Kenyan orphans and vulnerable children.
"If this pilot ArtKits project is successful, we will target new sites in Vermont and Kenya, and other countries to broaden our Child-to-Child Art Exchange"
-Cacky Peltz
"Children learn ‘about’ the arts in ways that partly depend upon their level of development and partly on the teaching and the resources made available to them. A work of art emerges from an active involvement with paint, clay, stone, sound, the body in movement. That involvement leads to a shaping into new structures that open fresh perspectives on the lived world."
