Disgrace by J.M. Coetzee

October 24, 2004

Disgrace by Nobel Prize Winner and leading South African novelist, J.M. Coetzee, confronts us with an unfamiliar post-apartheid world in which terrible ethical and political conflicts arise. It is a wonderfully written book that cannot but involve us in significant dialogue having to do with tensions between and within different cultures.

"I am not a herald of community or anything else. I am someone who has intimations of freedom (as every chained prisoner has) and constructs representations of people slipping their chains and turning their faces to the light."
