2008 Greene Grant awarded to:
The Center for Peace Building International (CPBI)
The African Great Lakes Project
The Center for Peace Building International (CPBI)was founded by an international group of young professionals, who seek to play a role in the transforming environments of violence into ones of peace. CPBI promotes the understanding of the role of young people in conflicts and in peace processes, and strengthens connections between young peace-builders around the world. The African Great Lakes Project uses narratives from refugees of the Rwandan genocide as an educational tool-kit for American youth. Lesson plans explore issues such as the root causes of conflict, racial differences, and finding a way to creatively deal with genocidal tragedy. Ultimately, the tool-kit seeks to inspire a student’s understanding, empathy and action. The African Great Lakes Project's long-term plans to:
- Create an interactive web portal where students learn form each other about the project
- Create specialized tool-kits, which delve into specific topics in greater detail.
- Explore ideas for communities of youth from other areas of conflict.
"Learning about the Rwandan genocide can be a catalyst for observing seeds of genocide in the cruelties of student experiences everywhere - and for joining with Rwandan survivors and local peace-builders to adopt ways of hope and peace."
"We know that imagination makes metaphors, effecting often unexpected connections in experience."
