2007 Greene Grant awarded to:

Time In Children’s Art Initiative

Bringing Children Out of At-Risk Schools and Into HiArt!

In June 2007, The Maxine Greene Foundation, Inc. awarded a Greene Grant to The Time In Children's Arts Initiative at HiArt! (a fiscally sponsored project of The New York Foundation for the Arts). Founded by Cyndie Bellen-Berthezene, an accomplished educator, multi-disciplinary artist, and author, Time In:

  • Partners with children and teachers of P.S. 241 in Harlem to provide year-long, weekly half-day arts immersions for all the First Grade, Kindergarten and Pre-K classes either at the HiArt! studio in Chelsea, or at museums, galleries and other arts venues around the city. The entire program is provided free of charge to the partner school.
  • Introduces students from underserved schools to a full range of arts-based experiences—music, movement, hands-on and visual arts, literature and film. The young students learn to express themselves artistically as individuals and develop the sustained focus needed to work on a single project over an extended period of time.
  • Seeks to expand its program within P.S. 241, and include additional New York City area schools.

"When I was in graduate school one of my professors made it quite clear that he deemed my belief in the transformative power of art an 'instance of the most puerile romanticism.' In one year of Time In I have proven him wrong a hundred times over."
