2007 Greene Grant awarded to:

Local Learning: The National Network for Folk Arts in Education

Construct Knowledge....Make Art

In June 2007, The Maxine Greene Foundation, Inc. awarded a Greene Grant to The National Network for Folk Arts In Education, a collective of over 450 folklorists, educators and folk and teaching artists dedicated to the inclusion of folk arts in the nation's education. Funding will support www.CARTS.org (Cultural Arts Resource for Teachers and Students) its award-winning website, to:

  • Re-design the site to include features that teach aspects of folk arts, ethnography and their curricular connection.
  • Spotlight organizations that share the Network's commitment to local learning and community-based art and expand outreach efforts.
  • Develop new virtual folk artist residences with National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellows in conjunction with the 25th anniversary of the Fellowship Program.
  • Use new technology to share multi-media presentations by folklorists, artists, educators and students.

"Often the folk arts are overlooked, especially in K-12 settings, yet our traditional culture is where we live most of our lives: how we raise our children, what we hold dearest, how we express ourselves, the way we do our jobs. Our work engages people on important journeys of self-discovery as well as community and aesthetic discovery."
