The Characters of Sarah Jones – The Character Within…
In September 2003, The Maxine Greene Foundation, Inc. awarded a Greene Grant to Tony Award-winner, Sarah Jones, allowing her to set time aside to develop a roster of multi-cultural characters for her solo theatrical presentations.
- Sarah’s solo shows include "Bridge & Tunnel", originally produced Off-Broadway by Meryl Streep, and went on to become a critically acclaimed, long running smash-hit on Broadway.
- Her career includes a sold-out run at The Kennedy Center, tours of India, Europe and South Africa, performing for the United Nations, members of the U.S. Congress, and the Supreme Court of Nepal. She was recently commissioned by the WK Kellogg Foundation for a piece entitled A Right to Care, tackling themes of inequality in health.
- Sarah is the first artist in history to sue the Federal Communications Commission for censorship. The lawsuit resulted in reversal of the censorship ruling, which had targeted her hip-hop poem recording, "Your Revolution."
"As a playwright and performer, I have been fortunate to benefit from the generosity and vision of great philanthropies like the Maxine Greene Foundation. My characters and I are truly grateful!"

"And, on occasion, those who have been marginalized, who feel forever strangers, may find themselves unexpectedly recognized as persons, as individuals. If they can join others as persons — only fully human when they experience themselves as members, as participants — a groundwork may be laid for new communities. "
